Photovoltaic Technologies: Capabilities and Facilities

Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems

A CSE research assistant inspects a solar cell prior to integration into a prototype solar module.

Fraunhofer CSE’s Photovoltaic Technologies group is focused on developing and testing PV modules and designing better installation and integration of PV systems with buildings. In particular they do:

  • Silicon and III-V wafer process and defect analysis
  • Cell and module performance assessment
  • Polymer science and engineering
  • Numerical analysis and semiconductor device physics
  • Thin film process development and reliability engineering
  • Module manufacturing and quality assurance
  • Failure analysis and materials characterization
  • Durability and lifetime analysis

Lab and Outdoor Testing Facilities

The Center headquarters in Boston has indoor testing capabilities for environmental testing, materials characterization, and module fabrication labs. CSE also has outdoor testing facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, co-located with CFV Solar Test Laboratory, and maintains a test site in Revere, Massachusetts.
