High-Performance Building Retrofit Options

As the availability of energy-efficient systems and materials increases, seeing how they work in real-world situations -- and with one another -- becomes increasingly crucial. Working on behalf of the US Department of Energy, CSE researchers examined two elements in particular: high-performance windows and vacuum insulation panels (VIPs).


 

PCM Enhanced Building Envelopes

This Building America project focused on analyzing building envelopes that had been enhanced with phase change materials (PCMs), which can simultaneously reduce total cooling loads and shift peak-hour loads.


Cold Climate Building Enclosure Solutions

As part of project work undertaken for the US Department of Energy's Building America Program, the Building Enclosures team investigated the energy performance and cost effectiveness of several state-of-the-art retrofit strategies that could be used in residential houses in the Boston and New England area. To realize this goal, our researchers evaluated the applicability of several emerging building enclosure technologies.
